A village boy Ivan Brovkin was considered a good-for-nothing, that’s why the head of the collective farm tried to keep him away from his daughter Lyubasha. Zakhar Silych tried to make a truck driver out of Ivan, but the latter let his mentor down by sinking a collective farm truck in the river. Only the intercession of his mother and a call-up paper helped him to evade serious consequences. Of course, Ivan didn’t become a skilled warrior at once, but soldier friendship and mutual readiness to help, assistance and attention of commanders helped him to achieve success in military service. Meanwhile Lyubasha was waiting for her lover and rejecting the addresses of the “intelligent” accountant. Corporal Ivan Brovlkin came home on leave being a different person and Lyubasha was no longer afraid of fellow villager’s stinging remarks and backbiting about her lover. The military service turned Ivan from being a bad lot into a self-reliant man, ready to deal with any hardships in life.
