The film is based on the Anton Pavlovich Chekhov stories "The Bet", "The Lodger", "From memories of the idealist", "Imprudence", "On the mill", "The Cobbler and the Devilry". A young jurist student and a big banker make a bet on two millions of rubles. According to the bet conditions, the student has to spend fifteen years in a jail, sitting in the single chamber.
