The movie is based on M.E. Saltykov-Schedrin’s play of the same name. The events take place in the 1860s. Bobyrev comes to the capital of the Russian Empire from province. He hopes that his old friend, who has become an influential man, will help him get settled there. But Bobyrev’s friend has his own plans for him and his wife, a charming and beautiful Sofia.
