Austria — Romania
Austria — Romania
Kick-off on 07.06.25 21:45.
On Matchday 3 of Group H in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Austria will host Romania at Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna. The hosts are making their debut in this qualifying campaign, while the visitors have earned three points. These sides have met four times on Austrian soil. In the Euro 2008 qualifiers, the teams drew 0–0. In the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, the Central Europeans pulled off a comeback win in Klagenfurt thanks to a brace by former Kaiserslautern and Fortuna Düsseldorf striker Erwin Hoffer, winning 2–1. Marko Arnautović, who remains part of the national team, came off the bench in that match 16 years ago. In a June 2012 friendly, the teams once again drew 0–0. During the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League B group stage, the Tricolors earned their first win away to Austria, 3–2.

In March, the hosts attempted to earn promotion to the UEFA Nations League A, but lost out to Serbia (0–2, 1–1). Ralph Rangnick’s side has lost just once in their last 13 home games—a narrow 2–3 defeat to Belgium. During that stretch, the national team crushed Norway 5–1 and Turkey 6–1, and also earned solid 2–0 victories over Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
Romania lost their opening qualifier 0–1 to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Bucharest. However, they bounced back with a 5–1 thrashing of San Marino in Serravalle, converting two penalties. The Carpathian squad has won seven of their last eight matches. In six of those games, Mircea Lucescu’s men scored at least three goals.
