In the opening round of the Ukrainian Premier League, Epicentr will take on Shakhtar at the Roman Shukhevych Stadium in Ternopil. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides. The reigning First League champions are preparing for their debut in the top flight, having only entered professional football in the 2020/21 season. Serhiy Nahornyak’s team is currently unable to host matches in Kamianets-Podilskyi, as the local stadium does not meet UPL requirements. For Shakhtar, this fixture will already be their fifth official match of the season, as the Donetsk club is competing in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, starting from the second round.

The UPL newcomers played just four preseason friendlies in July — suffering defeats to Kolos (0-5) and Bukovyna (0-2), while drawing 1-1 with both Rukh and Obolon. The club from Khmelnytskyi Oblast strengthened its squad by signing Andriy Boryachuk (from Metalist 1925), Denys Yanakov (from Chornomorets), and Vadym Sydun (from Karpaty). They also brought in two Spaniards: Nil Koch Montalà (from Pobla Mafumet) and Joaquinete (from UE Santa Coloma).

Shakhtar’s preseason featured matches against Gorica (Croatia, 1-0), Slovácko (Czech Republic, 1-1), Slovenian Second League side Grosuplje (5-0), and First League club Triglav (0-1). The Miners brought back Marlon, who most recently played for LAFC. The Orange-and-Blacks sold Israeli defender Stav Lemkin to Twente for €1.5 million, loaned Luka Latsabidze to Dinamo Tbilisi, and Kyrylo Sihieiev to Tatran Prešov. The club also parted ways with Andriy Totovytskyi, Yaroslav Milokost, Yehor Onishchuk, and Oleksandr Lomaha.
