In Matchday 5 of Group E of the European World Cup Qualifiers, Georgia will host Spain at the Boris Paichadze Stadium. The hosts currently sit third in the group with three points, while the visitors top the table with a perfect record of twelve points. In October, during the first-round fixture at the Manuel Martínez Valero Stadium in Elche, La Furia Roja defeated their opponents 2–0. The two teams have met three times before in the Caucasus region. During the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Spain scored the only goal in the 86th minute to win 1–0. In the previous World Cup qualification campaign, Georgia took the lead but lost 1–2 after conceding in stoppage time. In the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Luis de la Fuente’s side demolished the hosts 7–1 — Georgia’s heaviest defeat in history — with Álvaro Morata netting a hat-trick.

Willy Sagnol’s men previously lost 2–3 to Turkey in Tbilisi, almost coming back from 0–3 down, and then comfortably beat Bulgaria 3–0. PSG midfielder Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has scored twice in this qualification campaign. Over the past two years, Georgia have lost only two home matches — the aforementioned meeting with Turkey in Group E and a 0–1 defeat to Albania last autumn in the UEFA Nations League B Division.

Spain, meanwhile, cruised past Bulgaria in Sofia, scoring all three goals before halftime, and then crushed Turkey 6–0 in Konya, again netting three times in the first half. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has already scored six goals in this qualification — after managing only four in total for the national team over the previous five years. Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal has contributed to six goal involvements so far.
