In the final of the European World Cup qualification playoffs, Bosnia and Herzegovina will face Italy at Bilino Polje Stadium. The opponents met twice on Bosnian soil in 2020: in the European Championship qualifiers, the visitors secured a 3–0 win, and in the Nations League, Italy prevailed again with a 2–0 victory. In those matches, Cagliari forward Andrea Belotti recorded two goals and one assist.

Bosnia and Herzegovina finished second in Group H of the main qualification round, collecting seventeen points. During the group stage, the team exchanged results with Austria (1–1 and 1–2), defeated Romania twice (3–1 and 1–0), recorded results against Cyprus (2–2 and 2–1), and confidently overcame San Marino (6–0 and 1–0). In the playoff semifinal, the Bosnian side eliminated Wales in Cardiff, winning 4–2 in a penalty shootout. Forty-year-old Schalke forward Edin Džeko scored six goals across those matches. Previously, the national team reached the World Cup qualification playoffs in 2009 but lost twice to Portugal by a 0–1 scoreline.

Italy finished second in Group I with eighteen points. During the qualification campaign, the Italian side suffered two heavy defeats to Norway but performed successfully against Israel, Estonia, and Moldova.
