Morty goes to school and doesn’t really stand out among his classmates. His grandfather, Rick, on the other hand, is nothing like your average old man. With plenty of time on his hands, he devotes himself to scientific experiments — and he’s actually good at it. Out of the junk in his garage, he’s built a flying saucer capable of interdimensional travel. He can even wake his grandson up in the middle of the night to drag him along on another wild adventure.

The animated series is created using traditional 2D animation, without any 3D effects — but that hasn’t hurt its popularity. Most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and the show’s IMDb rating tops nine out of ten.

Justin Roiland was the creative force behind the idea for the project. Back in 2007, he sketched out a parody of Doc Brown and Marty McFly — the iconic characters from the classic film trilogy Back to the Future.
