After the death of his parents, young accountant William Blake, in hopes of finding work, comes to the Wild West, where a bounty of $500 is put on his head. Wounded in the chest near his heart, he is nursed back to health by an Indian who has been taken to cities in America and England for years as a living exhibit. He mistook the young man with glasses for the poet William Blake, whose poems had struck at the heart of the "savage", and he became his guardian angel. But the man, without his glasses, suddenly began to shoot without a miss, increasing the value of his head, leaving behind him a trail of corpses of reward-seeking individuals, and approaching "the place from which all spirits come and to which they return".
