The central character of the 2024 documentary Recovery is a young man who enlists in the Armed Forces of Ukraine on his birthday, determined to defend his homeland from Russian invaders. During combat, he suffers a severe head injury. After a long and difficult evacuation, his fellow soldiers and military medics manage to save his life. But Ivan now faces a long and challenging road to recovery. By his side throughout the ordeal is his sister. During his rehabilitation, they encounter numerous injustices and hardships, prompting her to launch her own investigation. Traveling across Ukraine, from west to east, she gathers personal stories of life during wartime. Through her journey, viewers gain insight into the challenges of mobilization, rehabilitation, and medical care, as well as public attitudes toward wounded soldiers. Recovery is the first documentary in Ukraine to chronicle the stages of military rehabilitation. It marks the full-length directorial debut of filmmaker and producer Mariia Koblyk. In the film, she divides the medical narrative into two parts: psychological recovery and physical rehabilitation. The documentary features insights from neurosurgeons, psychologists, and psychotherapists, as well as the daily work of rehab specialists. It premiered in Ukraine on July 18, 2024. The story is based on true events — its protagonist is the director’s real-life brother. Mariia Koblyk spent over six months living with him in various medical facilities, documenting not only his recovery but also the lives of his fellow soldiers. Ivan’s journey toward healing is long, and the film captures the many human stories unfolding across the backdrop of war.
