The film takes place on a farm in Texas. Pearl dreams of leaving the backwoods and becoming a dancer. She must care for her bedridden father, obey her strict mother, and patiently wait for her husband to return from the war. When she learns about an audition for a dance troupe in a nearby town, she decides to take part.
