A simple Irish guy, Redmond Barry, shot an officer in a duel, so he had to run away from home and wander around the country. Having fallen into the hands of robbers, he is left with nothing, joins the ranks of the English army, after he deserts, but soon comes across the Prussian captain, who exposes him. It will take many years until Redmond returns home.
