Volodya works as an installer in Siberia; he comes to Moscow because his short story, published in the magazine "Youth", aroused the interest of the writer Voronin who invited Volodya to have an important conversation. In the subway, he meets with Kolya, a cheerful young lad returning from the night shift. Volodya is going to stay with his friends, but does not know exactly where the right lane is, so Kolya offers his help. On Chistoprudny Boulevard a dog that was left unattended bites Volodya. Kolya invites Volodya home to sew his torn pants and introduces him to his family. Soon it turns out that Volodya's friends left Moscow for the summer, Volodya leaves his belongings at Kolya's home and goes on business. Left home alone, Kolya hopes to get some sleep, but suddenly his friend Sasha comes to him, who was drafted into the army. Sasha asks Kolya to go with him to the recruitment office to obtain deferment due to the fact that Sasha today marries Sveta. After the recruiting office the friends go shopping to select the groom's new jacket. There they meet Volodya, who has just bought a new suit, and Kolya offers to buy a present for the bride instead of a jacket. They go to the record store, where his friend Alyona works.
