Each episode of Photo Contest features a fresh competition between two photographers facing off to capture images based on a specific theme. The themes in this documentary series change with every installment, ranging from the essence of Japan and the spirit of rock 'n' roll to architectural structures. Each contestant receives their assignment and has just one hour to find and capture shots that perfectly align with the given topic. Once the hour is up, the competitors are given 30 minutes in a studio to edit their raw footage.

After finishing their edits, the contestants present their final results to Agnès Grégoire, the Editor-in-Chief of PHOTO magazine. Her decision determines who will be crowned the best photographer.

Every episode of Photo Contest brings a new story and a new location. For instance, one installment unfolds under the Marseille sun, where two candidates compete for the top title. The two contestants, Clotilde Pene and Nathalie Kovachevski, have one hour to deliver the best possible photograph capturing the theme of art and rock.

The program is entirely dedicated to this photography competition, which pits pairs of photographers against each other in various cities and countries. Once they receive their brief, each photographer heads out in search of unique shots, racing against a strict time limit. The final images are evaluated by a strict and discerning judge who decides the winner of the photo battle. The winner receives a £50 voucher to spend on a photo book website.
